Saturday 28th January
Leonard Stanley 0 - 2 Broadwell Amateurs |
Stanley were without the services of Phil Fanstone, Griffin and Davis for this encounter, but were beaten by the better side on the day. However, they can count themselves unfortunate to concede an unlucky own goal, which effectively settled matters. There were patches of good football by both sides, but the visitors clearly had the edge and opened the scoring after Belfont rose the highest to head home. With Stanley looking to work their way back into the game, frustration grew as opportunities were scarce against a very experienced Broadwell side. The killer blow came after 40minutes, when a Broadwell cross was heading for a goal kick, only for the unlucky Pegg to head under Roberts.
Stanley improved second half and almost found a way back in through Fanstone, but he saw his effort well saved. Panton had his header saved late on, by which time it was clear it was not going to be their day. There were positives for the home side in the second half, but surely the best news is that skipper Phil Fanstone is back after a long term injury. |

A snippet of action from the match |
Saturday 21st January
Gala Wilton 1 - 1 Leonard Stanley
Stanley left the Gala club with a deserved point after this windy encounter. The visitors kicked into the strong wind in the first half, but dealt with the Gala attack extremely well. Collins looked lively for the hosts, almost putting them ahead with a well struck volley and minutes later, drawing a great save from Roberts after guiding a corner kick towards goal. Stanley also looked dangerous going forward and were rewarded on the half hour after a smart Fanstone turn allowed Jon Panton to finish emphatically at the back post. With Gala one of the title favourites this season, a quick response was required and after a Hemming cross was guided by the wind, the fortunate number ten was placed to tap home. Stanley looked the stronger of the two sides for the majority of the second half, with new signing Pegg, Panton and Measures linking up well on several occasions and Brinkworth putting in a great performance. Fanstone looked to have settled matters in the closing stages, but his effort was cleared off the line and the points were shared.
Saturday 14th January
Leonard Stanley 3 - 4 Stroud FC
A fantastic game for the neutral but Stanley should really be taking three points from these fixtures. It took 70 minutes for Stanley to find their feet, finding themselves 4-1 down after taking an early lead through Yemm. Broadley, Panton and Merrett should take great credit for getting Stanley back into the game; Broadley heading home on 75 minutes, followed by a spectacular overhead kick by Yemm. Stanley had an equaliser controversially ruled offside, but again it was two penalties that settled matters, with Stanley having a late appeal of their own turned down. A lesson for some, who were more concerned with pointing the finger than showing the backbone that Panton, Merrett and Broadley displayed.
Sunday 8th Jan - Stroud Charity Cup Quarter Final
Dursley Town 2 - 1 Leonard Stanley
Leonard Stanley faced a fresh Dursley side a day after their epic comeback over high flying Star F.C. Stanley dominated affairs in the first half, with Griffin looking particularly lively. Stanley took a 1-0 lead into the second half through a Matt Fanstone penalty, but Saturday's affairs clearly had an impact on the visitors who can feel hard done by with the two penalty decisions which settled the game
