Stroud Charity Cup WINNERS - 2009
CHARITY CUP WIN MAKES IT
A DOUBLE

Leonard Stanley 4 .....Matson FC j0
Stanley completed a magnificent double with a comfortable win over Matson in the Charity Cup final at Brimscombe on Friday May 8.
Stanley made several changes to the team that had won the final league match three days previous.
A bright Stanley start forced Matson onto the back foot and they conceded several corners. However if was Matson who had the first clear-cut chance when they forced Roberts to tip a shot round the post.
Then on 13 minutes came a pivatol moment. A Matson player laid a clear headbut on Mark Davis that resulted in a red card forcing them to play the vast majority of the game with 10 men. Moments later a Stanley corner by Rob Harkins was headed back across goal by Rog Merrett and Joe Yemm was on hand to slot home. After this it was all Stanley - an on 25 minutes Yemm took a free-kick just inside his opponents half. What seemed a harmless enough ball into the box was lost in the evening sun by the Matson keeper and it bounced off him into the top corner of the net for Yemm to claim his second.
As the half drifted by with many free-kicks being awarded to Stanley they began to dominate proceedings. Carl Harrison was busy on the left side and Merrett, Davis and Jeff Llewellyn took charge of the central midfield. A free kick into the box by Harkins was met by Yemm who tucked it away. This completed a superb first half hat-trick from the centre half and stand in skipper.
A 3-0 half time lead was more than Stanley could have hoped for and the start of the second half saw them shut up shop. Matson were restricted to long range efforts which rarely tested Roberts.

Matt Fanstone continued to work and run the defence ragged but he didn't manage to get a shot in and test the keeper until, with twelve minutes remaining he set of on a run and scored the goal of the game with a 25 yard shot that rocketed into the top corner and seal the victory!
This was a fine performance by all the Stanley players, Dave Broadley had a solid game at the back along with Joe Hill-Pemberton. Jeff Llewellyn had a good game in midfield and Bradley Brinkworth was always a threat down the right hand side.
To seal a perfect night, stand-in-skipper and hat-trick hero Yemm lifted the cup- much to the delight of the Stanley crowd. All this was in complete contrast to eight days previous when the team suffered disappointment in the County Cup Final.
Leonard Stanley will be crowned Stroud League Division. 1 champions on Saturday 16th May at Stonehouse Freeway at 2-30 pm. Hey . . why not Be there!!
Details of an end-of-season bash are to be confirmed . Tour is also fast approaching so please can you get your outstanding money to Dave Broadley if you have not fully paid up!!!
